My Teaching Philosophy

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Vivien Gibbons, and I hold a PhD in Philosophy and Religion, with a concentration in Women's Spirituality.

Education is one of my core values, as I believe it has the power to heal, empower, and inspire transformation on personal and societal levels. This is one of the reasons why I became an educator.

I believe everyone possesses valuable knowledge, making us all teachers. In my classes, I prioritize a student-led approach to recognize and respect their insights and expertise. This method also influences my teaching modalities and content, ensuring that learning is a dynamic journey tailored to the unique requirements and skills of each class. Learning should not remain static; it should be a vibrant and progressive undertaking.

In my classroom, I cherish the importance of community, creating a safe space for reflection and growth that respects the diverse paths of students. My commitment to learning, inclusivity, amplifying marginalized voices, examining our privilege, and uplifting unheard perspectives fuels my educational journey.

Teaching is both an honor and a joy for me and I eagerly embrace every teaching opportunity. I invite you to explore my website to discover my teaching background, speaking engagements, writing samples, and more.

Recognizing that each person's learning journey is unique, I adapt my teaching to be inclusive and accessible to all. By incorporating various learning styles and adjusting the pace to support neurotypical and neurodivergent students, I aim to facilitate the understanding and integration of knowledge for everyone.

In my teaching, I incorporate reading materials from various sources that represent a range of experiences and beliefs, including voices from marginalized communities like BIPOC, LGBTQI+, differently-abled individuals, neurodivergent individuals, and others.

Education is not just a profession but a lifelong passion, bringing me immense joy when I witness students connecting with the material, gaining new insights, inspiration, and a deeper understanding.

Throughout my life, I have been a dedicated learner. My pursuit of wisdom delves into the profound overlap of philosophy and spirituality, particularly emphasizing the experiences and perspectives of women. This exploration is not just academic but deeply transformative and personal. Engaging with the works of various thinkers, I draw inspiration from the diverse voices of women that enrich the tapestry of women's spirituality to inform and inspire my life.
